John Cadbury was the founder, who started making cocoa at his grocery shop in Birmingham, in 1824. His sons, George and Richard, carried on the Cadbury chocolate business when he retired.

Over the years, Cadbury has joined with several companies to share resources, skills and provide best value for money to Cadbury consumers.

For the first venture, Cadbury came together with chocolate makers J S Fry and Sons in 1919. Decades later, in 1969, Cadbury wanted to expand - and merged with Schweppes. In 1989 Cadbury acquired both Trebor Group ltd and Bassetts Foods and created Trebor Bassett. In 2000 Cadbury merged with Trebor Bassett to become Cadbury Trebor Bassett. More recently, in 2005, they were able to buy Green & Blacks organic chocolate company. However, by 2008 it was time for Cadbury and Schweppes to separate again, so Cadbury could concentrate on chocolate and Schweppes on beverages.

Another opportunity for Cadbury came along in 2010, when the company became part of Kraft Foods. Kraft created a new division in 2012, called ‘Mondelez International’ - which Cadbury is still a part of today.

Most of Cadbury chocolate is suitable for vegetarians - just check for a vegetarian symbol on the pack.

Yes, we have the Plant bar, which is vegan-friendly.

Sometimes, we make chocolate just for a certain market’s tastes. That’s why some Cadbury chocolates abroad are not available here, and some UK and Ireland chocolates aren’t on sale overseas. The same goes for the USA. Cadbury has a franchise agreement with Hershey Chocolate and they make a selected range of our chocolate, just for America.

The Cadbury Foundation was originally set up in 1935 by the Cadbury family. It was a tribute to George and Richard Cadbury’s commitment to improving the working conditions and welfare of their workers and communities. Today, the foundation continues to support employees and communities through skill improvement, education, funding and volunteering.
